History of Women Empowerment
It is not a matter of the past that women in hundreds of countries are not allowed to vote. After many harsh movements, revolutions, and protests, women’s voices rose speedily to provide equal rights in every field. After gaining voting rights, women feel empowered in society.
Indian history is a witness to women’s ill-treatment. We all heard about the Sati Pratha in ancient times and girl abortion in the present situation. Not only this, women face many other crimes such as rape, acid attack, dowry system, domestic violence, etc.
But it doesn’t mean India doesn’t have respect for women; in Vedic days, the word ‘sahadharmini’ means an equal partner in every life situation, which means women in Vedic days were treated well and enjoyed respect in society.
As time passed, Indians started following Middle Eastern, Western, and British cultures. As a result, the respect and power enjoyed by women in ancient times were lost.
After many movements and protests, women started regaining their lost power in every field, such as our first Prime Minister(Indira Gandhi) and President (Pratibha Patil), Kalpana Chawla first female astronaut of India to go into space, and sportspeople like P.T Usha, P.V Sindhu, etc.
Women are also provided with equal rights to education which gave us many female scientists Dr. Indira Hinduja, Dr. Aditi Pant etc.
Need for Women Empowerment
Our society needs to maintain a 50-50% ratio between men and women. However, women feticide and criminal offense against women decreased the sex ratio in India.
The women’s literacy rate is very low in India. They are not even provided with primary education. Women are not supposed to dominate their husbands no matter how bad he is at earning livelihood and happiness for their family. Women are not considered a member of their parents’ property. They are paid less for the same work as compared to men.
Importance of Women Empowerment
Women empowerment came in like fresh air for women who were ill-treated previously. It made them aware of their rights. India is a nation among many others where women are still not safe; female foeticide, rape case, and domestic violence occur daily in our Indian society.
“Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.”

Think about a situation in a country where only men are allowed to earn for their family; on the other hand, both men and women can earn together to improve their family’s wealth and happiness. Countries, where men and women earn money are stronger nations in the world, such as America, China, Russia, etc.
Ways to Empower Women
We all should come together, government and civilians, to start spreading awareness about women’s empowerment and how an educated woman can improve our society.
The government needs to start new missions like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, Working Women Hostel, Mahila-E-Haat, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Mahila Shakti Kendra, etc. to empower women. We should allow compulsory schooling for girls.
Women must be treated equally in every area, irrespective of gender, and they must also be awarded equal compensation for their work.
